Classics & Shakespeare

Saddleback's Classics & Shakespeare collections bring the world's best-loved literature to striving readers without watering down the story. Choose from five formats to match how your students read best: Timeless Classics retells the original novels in full prose, Timeless Shakespeare presents the plays in script format with simplified language, Illustrated Classics pairs the story with full color graphic novel art, Graphic Shakespeare retells the plays with full color graphic illustrations using the Dale-Chall vocabulary system, and Differentiated Timeless Classics offers an even more accessible version that looks identical to the standard edition on the shelf. Every title is adapted to retain the integrity of the original and grab a student's attention from the first page. Downloadable Audio and Guides are also available to support any of these titles in the classroom.

Timeless Classics

Timeless Classics are designed for the striving reader and adapted to retain the integrity of the original classic. These classics will grab a student's attention from the first page. Included are eight pages of end-of-book activities to enhance the reading experience.

Timeless Shakespeare

Timeless Shakespeare is designed for the striving reader and adapted to retain the integrity of the original play. These retellings of classic plays will grab a student's attention from the first page. Presented in traditional play script format, each title features simplified language, easy-to-read type, and strict adherence to the tone and integrity of the original.

Illustrated Classics

These literary masterpieces are made easy and interesting. This series features classic tales retold with color illustrations to introduce striving readers to literature. Each 64-page softcover book retains key phrases and quotations from the original classics.

Differentiated Timeless Classics

We've taken our Timeless Classics and Shakespeare and made them even more accessible. We've eliminated words and phrases that may have stumped emergent readers. We recognize that students in the same classroom may not have equivalent reading skills, which is why the two levels appear virtually identical on the outside. Inside, it's a whole different look, with a larger font and extra white space, making these stories visually appealing with the aim of improving reading comprehension, fluency, and confidence. Classic fiction is 80 pages and classic Shakespeare is 110 pages.

How Our Classics Collections Differ

All four collections adapt classic literature for striving readers; the difference is format and reading level. Timeless Classics retells the original novel in full prose, keeping the story's integrity intact. Timeless Shakespeare presents the plays in traditional script format with simplified language. Illustrated Classics tells the story through full-color graphic novel art paired with key phrases and quotations from the original text. Differentiated Timeless Classics takes the same titles from Timeless Classics and Timeless Shakespeare and simplifies the language further for emergent readers, with a larger font and extra white space, while looking identical to the standard edition on the shelf, useful for a classroom where students are reading the same book at different levels. Some titles, including several Shakespeare plays, are available in more than one format, so you can match the book to how a student reads best.

Who Differentiated Timeless Classics Is For

These titles work best when a classroom has students reading the same book at different levels. Because the cover and format match the standard Timeless Classics and Timeless Shakespeare editions, a student reading the differentiated version isn't visibly reading a "different" book; only the inside (font size, spacing, and word choice) is adjusted to remove barriers for emergent readers.
