Fuels are materials that are used to create energy. They may be burned or used up in other ways. For example, car engines burn gasoline to make energy. Oil is used for fuel. Oil is also known as petroleum. Fuels that come from oil are petroleum products. Some fuels do not come from petroleum. These other fuels are known as alternative fuels. They provide a different way to get energy. Some alternative fuels are natural gas, propane, hydrogen, biofuels, and alcohol. The sun, water, and wind can be used to create energy.
Earth gets most of its heat from the sun. The sun gives off heat and light, which are energy. Some of the sun's energy reaches Earth. Some of this energy is reflected, or bounced back, into space. Earth's surface also absorbs and stores some of the energy as heat. When Earth's surface and atmosphere become warm, they give off, or radiate, heat back into space. This helps keep Earth from becoming too hot or too cold.
The word organic describes products that are made using eco-friendly methods and materials. Organic products are natural. They are free from harmful pesticides and man-made fertilizers. We should "go organic" because using or eating organic products is good for our health and the environment.
Recycling is using waste materials to make new products. In recycling, garbage is collected. They are used again as raw materials to make something new. Aluminum, glass, plastic, and paper are often recycled. Recycling helps to save the Earth's resources. Less new material is needed if waste can also be used as raw material. Recycling also saves energy and reduces pollution.
Water is needed for all life on Earth. Almost 71% of Earth's surface is covered with water. Water is found in many forms. These include groundwater, surface water, and ice. Groundwater is water stored underground. It is found in aquifers, or areas of water under the ground. Surface water is stored in oceans, streams, rivers, and lakes. It is also stored in man-made reservoirs, which are lakes or ponds created by people. Because there is so much water here, Earth is known as "the blue planet."
